Micro-Moments: Healing When the Waves Won't Stop
May 31, 2026
You can't wait for life to calm down to heal. When the waves keep coming, micro-moments matter more. The shift from tense to calm, survival to gratitude - that's how you change frequency in the storm.
Today is my son's 12th birthday. We're not celebrating the way we planned because we had two ER visits in two weeks. First, a scooter accident that broke his collarbone in the exact same spot it broke the day he was born. Then, diabetic ketoacidosis. The waves that come when you have a medically complex child don't stop. They just shift shape.
This is the reality. A broken collarbone at birth we didn't find until day two. A mass on his kidney at three months old. A heart valve that hadn't closed. Developmental delays. A flat head. Type 1 Diabetes. Scoliosis. ADHD. Autism. Koehler's Disease. Hypermobility Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. Eight years of wild uncovering before we figured out what we were dealing with.
The last two years have been simpler. We found the information. We made the changes. We learned how to manage, but the reality of that amplified responsibility never goes away. It creates urgency, complexity, risk. It stacks on top of everything else you're carrying - work, relationships, your own health, the other people who need you.
This is what life complexity looks like when you can't wait for it to get easier.
The Waves Keep Coming
The moments come in waves. Just when you think you've found your footing, something shifts. Another ER visit. Another diagnosis. Another round of PT. Another reminder you're not in control of the timeline, the outcomes, or how this unfolds.
Love. Health. Connection. Peace. Joy. Truth. Authenticity. The only things you can actually hold onto when everything else is liquefying.
The Frequency of Survival
When you're in the thick of it - managing medical complexity, parenting on steroids, holding everyone's everything while your own system is screaming - you operate from a specific frequency. Dense. Heavy. Tense. Irritated. On-edge.
Your nervous system scanning for the next threat. Your body braced for the next wave. Your energy field contracted around what you can control because if you loosen your grip, everything might fall apart. This is survival frequency. It's what your system does to keep you moving when the complexity is relentless.
You can't heal from this frequency. You can't receive from this frequency. You can't access the perspective that might shift something when you're white-knuckling your way through the day. Changing frequency isn't about thinking differently. It's something else entirely.
The Shift From Tense to Calm
I've learned something over twelve years of waves with my son. The healing doesn't happen when things finally get easier. It happens in the micro-moments when I choose to shift frequency even when nothing external has changed.
My son is still medically complex. The ER visits still happen. The waves still come. I can shift from tense to calm in the middle of it by choosing a different frequency to operate from.
Gratitude does this. The kind where you're grateful for what actually is instead of getting lost in the grief of what you expected. I am grateful he's here. Grateful we know what we're dealing with now. Grateful for the information that helped us make changes. Grateful for the two simpler years even when the complexity returns.
That gratitude shifts the frequency. From contracted to open. From tense to calm. From scanning for threats to noticing what's actually present. The energy shifts - from irritated and on-edge to centered and patient. That shift is the healing. The frequency you're operating from while you're in it.
Micro-Moments Matter More
You can't wait for life to calm down to access healing frequency. If you're in the sandwich generation, managing medical complexity, caregiving while working, parenting while your own body is breaking down - waiting for easier means you never heal.
The micro-moments matter more than the big gestures. The breath you take before responding. The pause when you feel your system starting to contract. The moment you choose gratitude for what is instead of resentment for what isn't. The second you recognize you've slipped into survival frequency and consciously shift back to calm.
The seconds between the waves where you remember you have a choice about what frequency you operate from. Micro-moments of healing. Micro-moments of intention. Over and over until your nervous system learns this is possible even when nothing external has changed.
Holding Both
I hold both. The medical complexity and the gratitude. The ER visits and the love. The relentless responsibility and the moments of peace. I limit my expectations of what something should look like.
I wanted his birthday to be easier. I wanted the last two years of simplicity to mean the waves were done. I wanted the information and the changes to mean we were past this. That expectation creates suffering. The reality creates complexity. The frequency shift creates the capacity to hold both.
He's twelve. He's here. He's taught me more about holding and releasing identities than anyone else in my life. The responsible mother who has to fix everything. The strong one who can't break. The version of me who thought I could control the outcome if I just tried hard enough. He's taught me to hold what matters and release what I can't control.
The Long View
Success in life isn't the absence of waves. It's the capacity to shift frequency in the middle of them. I have a long view now. I've been in enough waves to know they don't last forever and they don't define everything.
The perspective I carry was forged like a diamond from the deepest depths of sadness. I was able to find myself and rise through it all by learning to operate from a different frequency while I'm in it. I am living proof that your dreams can be realized through the complexity - by learning to shift from survival to gratitude, from tense to calm, from expectation to what is, from the identity that grips to the one that releases.
Persist with consistency. Devote with a wide view. Love with an open heart. Release what you cannot control. Move at your pace.
When You Need Support Shifting Frequency
The work isn't about fixing the complexity. It's about shifting the frequency you operate from while you're in it. Reiki helps your nervous system make that shift - from tense to calm, from contracted to open, from survival to gratitude - creating space for a different frequency to exist alongside the reality.
